Video of the Week - April 17, ‘08 | Epic Failures and Goat Junk

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Posted by Jenn Lowther and Nadia Nascimento

Nadia

I’ve never had a more difficult decision to make since Halloween ‘98 in whether to be Sigourney Weaver from Alien or Sigourney Weaver from Gorillas in the Mist. I tell you, garbage island is pretty amazing and shocking but it may be a more fitting post during earth week since we are pretty thematic here. So here is the decision that I made. Part balls, part man voice on a goat. Kinda easy decision when I read it like that. Enjoy!

This video had me giggling so much that Nadia had to tell me to stop that it was distracting her too much. This video is what you get when you cross funny video clips, internet memes, and someone with a little too much time on their hands. Enjoy.

Memenatomy 101: LOLCats

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Posted by Jenn Lowther

For the second installment of Memenatomy 101, I bring you the LOLCat. I think that this is my favorite meme of all time. A LOLcat is a picture of a cat with a funny and usually grammatically incorrect caption - this language has been termed kitty pidgin or LOLspeak. As with any language, it has evolved to a point where the language has converged to a new set of rules in spelling and grammar. If you are unfamiliar with LOLspeak, you can refer to the LOLspeak glossary or if you’re feeling a bit lazy, check out the LOLspeak translator. If you want to make your very own LOLcat, checkout the LOLCat Buildr. I’ve posted mine below.

Common Themes

LOLcats have several themes that are extremely common, below are some of the most common themes that you will find

  • “Im in ur noun, verb-ing ur related noun.” This is the theme that I’ve used in the above LOLcat picture.

Humorous Pictures
  • “I has a noun” shows a cat in possession of an object.

  • “Invisible noun” show pictures of cats apparently interacting with said invisible object.

  • “flavor” shots specifically show a cat (or another animal) licking/eating an item, person or animal (including sometimes themselves) and remarking how “[noun] haz a flavor.”

And the winner is…

Monday, April 14th, 2008

A screenwriter, a stay-at-home mom and an area middle school teacher are the top winners in the first ever Mattress Mack Video contest sponsored by Gallery Furniture.

In January, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale had a good natured challenge for all of those who love to make fun of his patented Gallery Furniture “Save You Money” commercials. The public was invited to create their own commercial for the chance to win up to $25,000 in furniture and electronics and see their creation on-air.

“We were overwhelmed by the response, not only by the entrants but also by those that logged on to view the videos and vote,” McIngvale said.

The grand prize of a $25,000 Gallery Furniture shopping spree went to Houstonian James Kovacik. James, the creator of “Mattress Man,” works for a local radio station and has written multiple screenplays that he hopes will get picked up for production in the near future. James created the winning video with the help of Koop De Ville, a University of Texas film student, and Joel Ruiz who played the part of “Mattress Man.” James sang the entire theme song.

The second place prize of a $10,000 Gallery Furniture shopping spree was awarded to Erin Hernandez and her husband Markos for their video “The Wise Lawn Man”. Erin is a stay-at-home mom with three daughters and Markos is a high school theatre teacher.

In third place, receiving a $5,000 Gallery Furniture shopping spree is Charles Brown. Charles is an instructor at Stovall Middle School in Aldine ISD. Charles and fellow teacher, Mike Jefferson, impersonated Ray Charles and included a modern rap. According to the two men, the script they wrote did not last and most of it was adlibbed.

A big congrats to all of the winners and to the participants for making the contest such a success. We look forward to catching your commercial on TV!

Video of the Week - April 10, ‘08: Golden Showers

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Jenn

Nadia’s out sick today, your your stuck with just me this week:)  Forget April showers, this week I’m bringing you a surefire recipe for virtual golden shower. I know that this was an April fool’s prank, but it’s way to funny to pass it up. I would love to be a fly on the wall in Best Buy or Future Shop when they get some kid in the store trying to describe the new Nintendo Wii game and peripherals they want.
