From the Archive: What did he just do?!

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Skateboard tricks: after playing hours of Tony Hawk, you would think that real life could not get more impressive than its video game counterpart. But then you’d be wrong.

From our WhoTube contest with Transworld comes this video. A true spectacle of skate amazement, watch as a perfect “360 Flip Tailgrab Wallplant” is executed. Wow.

And while whatever he did is indeed a mouthful of technical wordplay, what we really got to ask is: “What did he just do?!”

When Beer Pong Becomes Art

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Here’s a meme recipe. Take a mundane activity and dial it up to 11. In this case, said activity is beer pong.

These university students showcase seemingly impossible beer pong shots. The ball is thrown with profound accuracy from crazy distances. Every bounce is calculated with razor precision. They do it all with such casualness, it borders on flippancy.

Here, beer pong has been elevated from sport to art form. And these boys have developed a masterpiece.

Chip’s Not Dead Yet video contest winners announced!

The Chip’s Not Dead Yet video contest challenged Vancouverites to put their creativity to the test in coming up with their best idea for a theme wave.  It was a tight race to the finish, but we’ve established our winners.  Drumroll please…

Congratulations to:

Alicia Krywaniuk! Her video ‘Run like a Canuck,’ featuring her son, Ethan, won the People’s Choice Award with the most votes.  She will receive a cash prize of $1,000.  Well done, Alicia and Ethan! (And Go Canucks, go!)

AND

24 Hours Vancouver & Yoyomama for their video ‘do the PJ wave’ as well as the Infant Studies Centre at UBC, for their video ‘Childhood Character’. These amazing teams have both won a shared sponsorship of the family wave! Look for them at the race.

Memelabs would like to give a big thanks to everyone who participated in this campaign. It’s been tons of fun for us. We adore doing work which benefits non-profits and look forward to doing more of the same in the future.

The Chip’s Not Dead Yet memorial mile is being held on Saturday June 20th, 2009.  People will run, walk or parade one mile uphill to raise critical funds in support of the BC Children’s Hospital.  Registration is open. Get in there early for a discounted rate and to start fundraising now!

From the Archives: Cellular South Hikers

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

In the grand tradition of Powdered Toast Man, comes this melodramatic take on Cellular South’s network coverage. Note to contest entrants: melodrama always kicks things up a notch.

Two hikers climb a snow-covered peak. One collapses — convinced he won’t make it. What ensues is the most operatic moment in UGC history. Dare I say it? It only lacks a fat blonde lady in a Viking helmet.

Will the helicopters find them? Will Corey speak with his darling Christy? Will Cellular South really come through? Watch to find out!

Clowns vs. Cops

Friday, May 1st, 2009

How do you choreograph an action sequence in film without any movement — and do it in one shot? Let the fine folks at Stink Digital answer that question.

As a showcase for Philips CINEMA 21:9 — which lends itself so readily to film — “Carousel” was designed to hold its own with Hollywood’s best.

Cops and clowns battle it out. Gun shots are fired. Glass is broken. There is no dialogue — only subtle sound effects and music.

You will watch this again and again. Not only does the storyline intrigue, it is meticulously detailed. Best of all, it is shot in a loop.
