LIVE UNITED Story Search Concludes

We’re proud to announce the results of the LIVE UNITED Story Search, our national search for authentic moving stories of how people are living united.

With votes coming in fast and furious to the very end, Ruth, the now 91-year old former teacher who shares her love of reading with parents and their young children captured the most votes with her story “90 Years and Still Teaching”.

As the recipient of the most votes, Ruth will be featured in United Way’s national brand advertising in 2010.

A special thank you to all the finalists from the LIVE UNITED Story Search: Caitlin, Shannon, Duane, Tom and Cindy, and to all who shared their powerful stories of how they’re working to create lasting change in their communities. Your work is an inspiration to us all and we plan to highlight many of these stories in 2010.

We’d also like to thank all of you who enthusiastically voted for your favorite story. We’re glad you found these stories as moving as we did and hope you’ll be inspired to help create lasting change in your community.

Finalists Selected for LIVE UNITED Story Search

Now It’s Your Turn to Vote For Who Will Be Featured in United Way’s National Brand Advertising in 2010

The votes are in, and we’re pleased to announce the finalists in the LIVE UNITED Story Search, our national search for authentic, moving stories of how people are living united to help improve the education, income and health of people right where they live. The top 5 videos, selected by our judges, are posted on the right.

Now you get to decide which of these great stories will be featured in United Way’s brand advertising in 2010. The voting tallies for these 5 stories have been set back to zero. The story that receives the most votes by 11:49 p.m. eastern time on Friday, October 16th will be the winner. So be sure to vote for your favorite each day (you can vote for each video once every 24 hours) and get your friends and family to vote too. We can’t wait to see who the public will choose.

A panel of advertising experts selected these stories from the 20 videos that received the most votes in the first round of the LIVE UNITED Story Search. With so many great submissions, the panel found choosing just three stories to be too limiting, so they expanded the final group to include 5 great videos. Now it’s your turn to choose the winner.

The panel, made up of advertising experts from our partner teams from McCann Erickson New York and the Ad Council, evaluated the videos based on the following criteria:

  • Alignment with United Way’s work on education, income and health
  • Effectiveness of the message
  • Online voting

How do you LIVE UNITED? Grab the closest camera and make a short video explaining how you’re working to improve the education, income and health of people right where you live. Submit your video to the LIVE UNITED Story Search and you could be featured in United Way’s national ad campaign in 2010.

Here’s how:

  • Record your story in no more than 2 minutes of video.
  • Upload the video between now and September 30.
  • Get your friends to vote for your story.

Don’t know how to make a video? It’s easier than you think! You can use a camcorder, a cell phone, a digital camera, a computer or anything else that records video. Stories will be judged on substance, not production quality, so don’t sweat the details.

What it means to LIVE UNITED

LIVE UNITED. It’s a credo. A mission. A goal. A constant reminder that when we as individuals think outside ourselves, we have the power to facilitate change.

More, it’s a command. To give. To advocate. To volunteer. To improve the education, income and health of people right where you live.

It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future. Living united means being a part of the change.

Whether you’re giving a monetary donation, advocating on behalf of these issues, or volunteering your time, you’re joining the movement to create opportunities for a better life for all.

What your video should be about

Your video should illustrate how you’re working to make a difference in one or more of the following areas:

  • Education: Helping children and youth achieve their potential through education
  • Income: Helping families become financially stable and independent
  • Health: Improving people’s health.

The video should describe how you give, advocate or volunteer in your community related to your chosen issue area, why you think this work is important and what lasting change you hope to influence.

For example:

GIVE
Through your gift to United Way you’re helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability and independence for hardworking families, and improving people’s health.

ADVOCATE
Anyone can champion the cause. Perhaps you’re speaking out to improve  education, income and  health, reaching out to members of Congress, or wearing the LIVE UNITED shirt to show your support.

VOLUNTEER
Whether it’s reading to children, leading financial literacy classes for hard-working families, or delivering meals to homebound seniors, your volunteer efforts can make a difference in the areas of education, income and health.

Once your video is uploaded to the site, get your friends and family to vote for your video and you may just be featured in a United Way commercial in 2010.
